Meal Delivery Box Review

The following post contains affiliate links and coupon codes.
These deals may change at anytime or no longer be valid when you read this post.
The following information is based off of my experience and could change.

Meal Delivery Fast Facts

  • I purchased from these three different companies using my own money: Gobble, Home Chef, and HelloFresh.
  • They are all subscription services, but you get to choose how often they are delivered.
  • You can easily cancel or pause your account or you can just skip weeks.
  • There are menus each week and you choose meals from the different menus.
  • Most of them have specialty options such as gluten free, nut free, dairy free, etc.
  • You get to pick how many meals you will get in your box and how many servings each meal has.
  • Meals come packaged in a box with cold packs.
  • They come with recipe cards.
  • The boxes have everything you need to cook a complete meal (except salt and pepper).
  • I learned a lot about cooking from ordering these boxes (different methods to cook certain foods and also different flavor combinations to try).

Box Reviews (in order that I tried them)

Gobble

Price

Get your first box for just $36 shipped.  You'll need to add 6+ servings to your box (3 recipes with 2 servings each is what I did).  This makes it $6 per serving. Use code WINTER636 at checkout. The end date to this deal has not been announced.

Packaging

The box it came in was recyclable and part of the insulation was recyclable. The cold packs did not mention if they were recyclable (but, of course, can be reused).
Some of the food was packaged in plastic and some was wrapped in paper. There was single-use packaging, but not all of it was.

Taste

Everything we ate from Gobble was delicious!  I did get two Asian type meals and the sauces were exactly the same (though the entire meal was completely different).

What's Notable?

Gobble had the most user friendly website.  The meals were also the easiest of all the companies I tried, but the instructions were sometimes hard to follow.  Gobble prides themselves on 15 minute meals, and I'd say this is pretty accurate.

This was the only company that left out a food item from one of my meals, but they were very easy to work with and refunded me for the missing items.

I did not reorder from them because the protein serving sizes were too small for our family (one chicken breast or piece of fish to share between two people). This would be a great option if you were just buying it for yourself.

Click this link to order your first Gobble box!  Use code WINTER36 at checkout if the deal doesn't automatically show up.

Home Chef

Price

Get $90 off your first 4 boxes. This breaks down to $30 off first and second boxes and $15 off third and fourth boxes.  You don't have to get all 4 boxes.  This price ends up being $5-6 per serving depending on how many servings you get.

Just click this link to redeem offer - no code needed. This offer ends at the end of January.

Packaging

I was very impressed with the way these meals were packaged.  The box, insulation, and cold packs are all recyclable or compostable.  Some food items are in paper but most are in plastic. There was single-use packaging, but not all of it was. Several items came in plastic that could be recycled or reused for something else (homemade spice blend, etc).

Taste

We've loved everything we have eaten from Home Chef (even the accidental box I ordered where they picked all of my meals)!

What's Notable?

You place your order and pay before you pick your meals.  That confused me when I first signed up.

Their recipe cards are large and already have holes punched in them.  I especially liked this because I use a three ring binder to hold all of my recipes.

Their recipes were very easy to follow and each card tells you how many days you have to cook each meal (I found this to be very helpful).

HelloFresh

Price

Get $80 off your first 4 boxes.  You don't have to get all four boxes for the deal to apply. The end date to this deal has not been announced.

Packaging

This was the only company that used bubble wrap for the insulation; however, they were also the only company who didn't use a plastic bags to separate each meal.  Each meal was contained in a brown paper bag. A lot of food items were also packaged in paper instead of plastic.  There was single-use packaging, but not all of it was.  Other than the bubble wrap, this was the most eco-friendly company.

Taste

We loved everything we ate from HelloFresh!

What's Notable?

HelloFresh's recipe cards were easy to read and very similar to Home Chef (but they weren't pre-punched with holes).

The website was a little hard to figure out at first, but was better after using it.

Did I Enjoy The Meal Delivery Boxes?

Absolutely!  It was so easy to just take out an entire meal from my fridge to prep and have ready in under an hour (mostly in under 30 minutes).  All of the guesswork was gone, but I still had some control in choosing meals and cooking them.

I also, unexpectedly, learned a few things.  I used methods to cook and spice combinations that I had not used before.  I will be able to continue using these even now.

What Company Did I Like the Best?

Right now - during the month of January - I would say that Home Chef is my favorite.  I did like this company the best AND they have the best deal right now.

If you are making this purchase after January, then you should go with either of the other companies.

I personally wouldn't have been able to try any of these had it not been for the deals they were offering.  I couldn't justify paying full price for any of these services.  That doesn't mean that you can't justify it - we all have different income and needs.

Go check out these three companies yourself and see which one you like the best!

Natural Mascara Review, Giveaway, and Coupon Code!

I have a friend who told me I should never leave the house without earrings (I've given up on this one - sorry, Ruth).  Another friend told me to never leave the house without mascara.  This one, I've pretty much kept up with.  It's the ONLY makeup that I actually wear most days.  Truth is, I don't even ALWAYS follow this rule.  BUT, If I AM going to wear makeup, it's mascara!
When I began my journey to living a more natural lifestyle, some things came easily.  I quickly learned how to make my own lotion, lip balm, diaper cream, and deodorant.  I also made some healing salves including my eucalyptus chest rub.  I branched out to dishwasher detergentlaundry detergent, and soap.  I even started selling some of these products in my online store

But what was the one thing I had no desire to make?  That's right, mascara!  It seemed to be too confusing and messy.  So, I just continued spreading this on my eyelashes most days.

One day, while perusing my local "natural mama's" Facebook group, I read about a lady who had just started making and selling natural mascara!  Yes!  This was my opportunity!  I contacted her right away and got some mascara.

Boardwalk Beauty is a local (to me) business run by a fellow mom named Lauren.  Everything she makes is all natural and handmade in small batches.  The mascara is made to order since it doesn't contain any man made preservatives.  She's also more than happy to adjust any of her products to suit your needs!

What I LOVED about working with Boardwalk Beauty and using her mascara:
  • She fully discloses ALL ingredients.  This is a big deal for me!  I am an ingredient list reader (top to bottom).  Not only did the mascara come with an ingredient list, she even told me where she purchased each ingredient and WHY each ingredient was in the mascara.
  • Which leads us to the ingredient list: aloe vera gel, vitamin E, calcium bentonite clay, activated charcoal, cocoa powder.
  • Even though it doesn't contain synthetic preservatives, it lasts 3-6 months. I've had mine for 4 months, and it's still good to go!
  • Lauren has been super nice and helpful!
  • Her packaging was minimal yet sufficient.
  • The mascara has good coverage.
  • The price is very comparable to other mascara on the market!
  • It's handmade and ALL natural.
Please excuse my wonky eyebrows here!
My only criticism:
  • It's not as thick as my old mascara, so I had to apply more than one coat. Sometimes, when switching to natural products there are just things that one must get over.  For me, this is one of them.  I did find that if I used my old brush, it helped some.
Other products from Boardwalk Beauty:
  • Lip balm in tubes, tins, and pots (Lemon Dream, Lime Twist, Hammock Time, Coconut Creme, Pier Peppermint, Wild Honey, Mint Chocolate Chip)
  • Bath salts (Hammock Time - Lavender, Cinnamon Bay, Pink Lemonade, Orange Creamsicle)
  • Cinnamon Bay Bronzing Butter and Scrub (which leaves a glow)
  • Daily facial cleanser with chia oil and raw honey.
How you can purchase Boardwalk Beauty products and get a discount:
  • Use code LEXIE2014 for 20% off entire purchase (this makes the mascara LESS THAN $10! (expires 9/16)
  • Order mascara through her Etsy shop: BoardwalkBeauty
  • Mascara and all other products can be seen and purchased through messaging her on Facebook.  Click here to see her products.
If you'd like to WIN some mascara from Boardwalk Beauty, please enter through the Rafflecopter at the bottom of this post.  If you are reading this via email, you will need to click into the actual post to enter!

How to Clean Your {Top Loader} Washing Machine Without Using Bleach... And Tips for Keeping it Clean!

Thank you for visiting our site today!
We would love for you to sign up for our email list and
join our Facebook page so that you don’t miss any updates!
I have included affiliate links in this post.  This means that if you purchase something after clicking from this page I will get a small percentage, at no extra cost to you.  Thank you for supporting my family and this free blog!

We've had the sickness going around our house.  You know, the one that makes you wash all the sheets, towels, clothes, toys, etc. at least 65 times (slight exaggeration - maybe).  Since I suffer with HG during pregnancy, I sort of have this slight fear of the sickness of which I speak.  So, I decided it was a good time to clean the washing machine.  It was a super easy task, and it even has me looking forward to wash day (ok, that may be another exaggeration).

What you'll need:

2 cups Vinegar (plus 1 cup more if you have a fabric softener dispenser)
1/2 cup baking soda
Multi-Purpose Citrus Cleaner (optional)

What you'll do:

1.  Fill your washing machine to the highest level with hot water then stop the machine (or you can be super frugal like me and do 1/2 hot and 1/2 warm).

2.  Pour 2 cups of vinegar and 1/2 cup baking soda right into the water.

3.  Turn your washing machine back on (remember you turned it off after you filled it up with water).  Let it agitate for a few minutes then turn it back off again leaving the water/vinegar/baking soda mix in the washer.

4.  While it's sitting there soaking, get a washcloth and clean the outside with some Multi-Purpose Citrus Cleaner.  Make sure you get all around the top and the bleach dispenser (it should pop right off to make it easier to clean).  Wipe down the inside of your machine using the washcloth and water from inside the machine.  You won't have to scrub hard, but you will need to wipe the agitator and tub to get all the dirt and grime off. There will probably be a ring above and below the water line so make sure you get it all.  You may need to spray your washcloth with some vinegar for added cleaning power.

5.  Fill the fabric softener dispenser full of vinegar and leave your machine alone for 30-60 minutes letting it soak.  After it sits, turn it back on and let it finish the entire cycle including an extra rinse cycle.
Tips for keeping your washing machine clean:

  • Use the correct amount of detergent.  Using too much will leave behind residue.
  • Stop using fabric softener.  Add 1/4 cup vinegar to the rinse cycle instead.
  • Leave the top opened when you aren't using it.  This will keep away mold and mildew.
  • Occasionally wipe down the inside of your machine and the dispensers.
  • Use the method above every few months to deep clean your machine.
For more information like this, check out the books below.  You can purchase all of these (plus dozens more eBooks and FREEBIES) for around $30!  Click the books for more details!

What other tips do you have for keeping your washing machine clean?  Let us know in the comments!

*I have included affiliate links in this post.  That means that if you order from Vitacost not only will you get $10 to spend, but I will too.  I also get a small percentage from other sales listed in this post.

Soap Nut Review and Giveaway (from The Laundry Ladies)

Thank you for visiting our site today!
We would love for you to sign up for our email list and
join our Facebook page so that you don’t miss any updates!

I normally make my own laundry detergent, but when I came across The Laundry Ladies at a local farmer's market selling soap nuts I just had to try them.  They graciously gave me some soap nuts and a laundry dryer bag to try.  The Laundry Ladies are offering FOUR of our readers a choice of the trial size soap nuts or the trial soap nut liquid (see giveaway at bottom).  AND, they are offering a 10% discount for our readers using code LEXIENATURALS10!  This code will be good until January 26, 2012 and can be used in their online store.

Soap nuts are actually a fruit from the Sapindus Mukorossi Tree.  The shells of this fruit contain saponin which produces suds and breaks up oils and dirt in clothing.  Learn more about soap nuts here.

So, how do the soap nuts work?  You simply put 5 soap nuts into a muslin bag (included with purchase) and throw it into the wash with your dirty laundry.  You can reuse the same nuts 5 times or until they no longer produce suds and are grey in color.  I actually found that I could wash 6 or 7 times with some loads of laundry.

The soap nuts come with detailed instructions and other uses.  You can also make a liquid version with the soap nuts by boiling them in water.

Other uses for soap nuts:

  • household cleaning (windows, counters, sinks, floors, etc.)
  • jewelry cleaning
  • bathing
  • hair washing
I used the soap nuts in the laundry, and I made a liquid version.  I used the liquid version to wash clothes and my hair.  Yes, my hair!
What I loved:

  • The soap nuts actually washed well.  The clothes were just as clean as if I'd used normal detergent
  • Using soap nuts is a very frugal option.  You can buy 5 soap nuts for just $3 and since you reuse the same soap nuts that's about $0.60 per load (and only $0.19 if you buy the replenish bag for only $12).  It's even cheaper if you boil the nuts and make the liquid version (only about $0.09 per load).
  • You can use them for so many different things.
  • I love to reduce, reuse, and recycle and I really feel like using soap nuts helps me do just that.
  • It cleaned my hair nicely without over drying.
  • I didn't feel the need to re-rinse my towels like I do with conventional detergent because there aren't many suds when using soap nuts.
  • The lavender dryer bag was heavenly. It made my clothes smell so very nice! I just wish it lasted more than a few loads.

What I didn't love:

  • When I made the liquid version I could hardly stand the smell, BUT once I added some lavender essential oil it was much better!
  • I couldn't use the soap nuts on my soiled kitchen towels.  I only wash once a week so my towels sit all week in a container.  Perhaps they'd work if I washed more often.
  • While I found the liquid version to work on my hair, I didn't just love it for the clothes.  I found the soap nuts worked much better.
Overall?  I really loved using the soap nuts and dryer bag.  The Laundry Ladies were very helpful with my questions and I loved working with them to bring you this giveaway.

Don't forget that you can use the code LEXIENATURALS10 to get 10% off your order with The Laundry Ladies through January 26, 2013Visit their website to see all of their other fabulous products.
If you are reading this via email you must click the rafflecopter link below to enter the giveaway.

*The Laundry Ladies did provide me with soap nuts, a muslin bag, and a lavender dryer bag; however, I was in no way paid to write this review.  Nor was I obligated to write a positive review.  This review is my personal opinion of the products I tried.
